Health Related Fitness Components and How to Improve these Parameters

There are four main health related fitness components. Here is a brief explanation of each one and how you can plan your fitness training to improve on each one.

Cardiovascular fitness

This is sometimes called 'aerobic fitness' or 'stamina'. How 'fit' you are here is about being able to provide a continuous supply of energy to support your body's activity requirements based on how healthy you circulation and respiration functions are.

For some people, they have sufficient cardiovascular fitness to allow them to walk to the shops, run for a bus, climb flights of stairs. For others, it would need to support you in sports and leisure activities, such as aerobics, cycling, football and so on.

If you improve on this health related fitness component, you can not only DO more active things, you can ENJOY them more!

Nothing worse than getting out of breath just playing with the kids, or missing that bus because you ran out of puff.

But also, there's a bunch of other benefits to good cardiovascular function:

  • You metabolise fat more efficiently
  • You deliver oxygen round the body better
  • You get rid of toxins faster
  • You raise your endorphins and decrease stress.

Strength

This particular health related fitness component is the ability of a muscle to exert a force to overcome a resistance. This doesn't just mean how much you can bench press or for sports. It affects how easy it is for you to carry heavy shopping bags, lift up your children and move furniture around the house.

Again, improving your muscle strength can seriously improve your enjoyment of life and ease the daily grind.

Endurance

Endurance is a different health related fitness component to strength. It is the ability of a muscle to make repeated contractions over any given period of time.

Daily activities such as climbing stairs, digging the garden, cycling to work, and cleaning. Muscular endurance is also important in sports where you constantly have to run, swing your arm, kick a ball, or repeated swimming strokes or step exercises.

Blood pressure recovery

Blood pressure is one of the most important measurements for monitoring personal health related fitness. It can either be measured manually by a professional or automatically using an digital blood pressure monitor.

The automatic monitors are ideal for personal home use, because it's so quick and easy. And if you are using the same monitor each time, then consistency is good and you can compare blood pressure recovery after exercise as you fitness regime progresses.
