Why a Healthy Breakfast is SO Important!

We hear it all the time – “A healthy breakfast is the most important meal of the day!”

But what does a "healthy breakfast" really look like and what benefits does it offer to you, particularly if you are trying to lose weight and body fat.

Yes, the importance of breakfast cannot be underestimated and if you didn't already know that a healthy breakfast is the most important meal of your day, these facts should be enough to convince you.

In fact, the recommendation by nutritionists is that breakfast should make up at least 25% of your daily calories.

Eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Queen and dinner like a beggar!!! This way, you front load your calories at the top end of the day, which makes sense because more calories are burned throughout the day than in the evening, all other things being equal.

Studies have also shown that people who habitually don’t have breakfast tend to have higher levels of cholesterol and so have a much higher risk of developing heart disease.

All the nutrition you get from a healthy breakfast really sets you up for the day. Not only is your energy high and your digestion improved, it’s been shown that people who eat breakfast tend to suffer less from illnesses, particularly the common colds and coughs.

When you eat a breakfast like a nutrition shake or healthy cereals and fruit, your bodys’ immune system is more likely to do its job properly. healthy breakfast shake

Why you should NEVER skip breakfast

Breakfast literally means “breaking the fast”.

If you think about it, your body has had nothing to eat since your evening meal – that’s a 12 hour fast! (excluding any extra evening nibbles).

So skipping breakfast is an awful thing to do yourself as it extends the fast way beyond the norm and makes it hard to get going in the morning. It’s like trying to drive your car on fumes!!!

For younger children, this overnight fast can be as long as 16 hours. So it’s important to support their little brains working properly that they have a good, healthy breakfast.

Many cereals are high fibre and nutrients (choose carefully by looking at the labels, avoid highly sugary ones and go for high fibre for slower release of energy through the morning).

Add some protein for sustained hunger control by adding milk (full fat if under two years) or yoghurt and include antioxidant-rich fruits to boost the immune system, like berries, orange or banana.

Importantly for weight loss, if you are hoping skipping breakfast reduces calories so you’ll lose more weight, think again! (See also counting calories page.)

The extended fast starts to put you into “starvation” mode, which means your body’s metabolism is at a real low. This switches off the fat burning process to try to save energy - a bit like hibernation really.

Having even a small breakfast helps to balance the food intake throughout the day, reducing hunger and cravings and therefore making overeating less likely.

Try from this short list of quick and healthy breakfast ideas:

  • cereal or muesli with milk, soya milk or yoghurt
  • smoothie made with yoghurt or soya milk with berries or banana
  • egg with a bit of milk or low fat cheese - microwave in a cup or pile on top of a slice of granuary bread or toast
  • porridge with berries
  • protein-rich nutrition shake (see below)

If you can't resist a cooked breakfast on a weekend, try grilling on a piece of kitchen foil a couple of slices of lean bacon, mushrooms and beans for a healthy and tasty alternative!
