Top Ten Weight Loss Motivation Tips: Strategies from Successful Dieters

If you're looking for ways to stay focused and engage that willpower, here are some weight loss motivation tips that work really well for me and my clients.

Try them out - and you should find one or two that work for you!

  1. BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND. Write down your own vision of where you want to be. Use a photo of when you felt good about your shape and yourself. What is your personal goal for achieving the weight loss?

  2. Write a LIST of positives about how you would feel if you lost that extra 2½ stone. E.g. getting in a favourite pair of jeans, playing footy with your kids, feeling great in a swimsuit again!

  3. Keep your brain IN GEAR. Learn your own weaknesses and food triggers, and look for ways to beat them or distract yourself and avoid getting too tired or going too long without food which can seriously challenge your willpower.

  4. Keep a DIARY (doesn't have to be forever) so you can self-evaluate what's going IN and what's going ON in your daily regime.

  5. Do it with a FRIEND. Most people find their natural competitive edge a great motivator!

  6. Don't beat yourself up if you have a 'bad' day. Remember, we get a brand new day every 24 hours - amazing! Every day is a new opportunity to start afresh and progress towards your goal.

  7. Create positive self-talk statements that become a daily "mantra" and repeat to yourself over and over when times get hard. For example, "Every day I am improving my health, my looks and my sense of wellness. I am strong and I can do it."

  8. Start a new interest or hobby around your new lifestyle - e.g. fashion, healthy eating, exercise for busy mums. You could even start your own SBI website like this one and earn an income online just from helping people!!!

  9. Read and learn from successful weight loss stories, join a club, find a chat room, or start your own online forum.

  10. REWARD yourself for a 'good' month (or week if you can afford it!) and for maintaining momentum. Learn to find new ways to TREAT yourself that aren't about eating or drinking. How about a relaxing bath, a gadget or fitness tool, a new pair of shoes, a new recipe to try.
